Reader Ministry
Lay Readers
It is necessary that those who exercise the ministry of reader, even if they have not received institution, be truly suited and carefully prepared, so that the faithful may develop a warm and living love for Sacred Scripture from listening to the sacred readings. (GIL paragraph 55)
Lay Readers are deputed to read the scriptures in the place of an instituted lector. The primary role of the Reader is to proclaim the readings from sacred scripture, except for the Gospel, during Holy Mass and other sacred celebrations. Readers emphasize the important points using variation in speed and volume to avoid a singsong or monotone presentation. Proclaimers is probably a better descriptive noun for our readers.
About
Readers are scheduled to prepare and read approximately one to two times per month during Holy Mass on Saturday, Sundays, Holy Days, and other special services throughout the Church year. At Masses without a deacon, readers also offer the Prayers of the Faithful. They occasionally will be called to read Holy Scriptures at funerals and weddings.
This ministry is available for all baptized and confirmed Catholics in good standing who are registered with our parish.
